Extreme Weather in San Antonio
If you visit San Antonio or move to the city, it’s important to be aware of extreme weather risks. While far from the coast, when hurricanes make landfall on the Texas coastline, the Alamo City can experience heavy rainfall and high winds. The roads in the city flood easily with moderate to heavy rains.
San Antonio is also one of the most flood-prone regions in the country. In 2002, the area received 35″ of rainfall in about a week, causing 12 deaths and widespread flooding.
The greatest risk the San Antonio climate offers is extreme heat.
The city had 22 average days with highs of 100 degrees or more from 1994 to 2023. By comparison, there were just 6 days per year on average with triple-digit heat from 1964 to 1993. Since 2009, San Antonio summer temperatures have been in the triple digits for 30+ days six times. This only happened four times between 1885 and 2009.
San Antonio had a record-breaking 75 days of 100+ temperatures from June 16 to September 24, 2023.
In areas like downtown, the urban heat island effect means the temperature is often higher than the official temp recorded at the airport. In dense urban areas, the loss of tree canopy and heat-absorbing asphalt and concrete make heat waves even more dangerous.
In August 2024, while an official high temperature of 108°F was recorded, Deceleration recorded a high of 120°F in downtown San Antonio with a “feels like” heat index temp of 129°F and 130°F after the relative humidity of 20% was considered.
Extreme heat killed more than 350 people in Texas in 2023. The true number is likely underreported because many counties, including Bexar, do not track heat-related deaths.
