A PCS move unfolds when a service member is directed to relocate to a new base at a distance of at least 50 miles, typically under government orders. The government shoulders the expenses of your move, albeit with a prescribed weight limit; any surplus weight may require your contribution. Cost of a Military Moves
Dislocation Allowance (DLA)
DLA assists with miscellaneous moving costs, generally paid once per PCS move. Exceptions include home-to-first-duty-station, government quarters, local household goods moves, and separation/retirement.
Monetary Allowance in Lieu of Transportation (MALT)
MALT covers driving to the new duty station, paying $0.16 per mile, and $0.18 per mile per authorized vehicle. Approval is required for more than two vehicles.
Move-In Housing Allowance (MIHA)
MIHA reimburses overseas living costs, covering one-time rent expenses, home modifications, and making a home habitable.
Per Diem Allowance
Reimburses meals and lodging during travel to the new duty station. Computed based on travel days, CONUS standard per diem, and traveler ages.
Temporary Lodging Allowance (TLA)
Offsets temporary housing and meal costs while waiting for permanent lodging, calculated based on pay grade, family size, quarters cost, cooking facilities, and local per diem rate.
Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE)
Partly reimburses meals and lodging during temporary housing needs, based on pay grade, family size, quarters cost, cooking facilities, and local per diem rate. Max rate: $290/day.
Advance Basic Pay
Interest-free loan for PCS moves, repaid in 12 equal installments. Up to three months' basic pay in advance.
Advance BAH
An advance for off-base housing costs, subject to approval by a Commanding Officer, limited to rental or leasing expenses.
Advance Overseas Housing Allowance (OHA)
An advance to cover the difference between non-base rental housing costs and BAH for up to 12 months, typically based on expenses.
