History of West Meadows

The area where West Meadows is today, northeast of Tampa, was farmland throughout most of the 20th century, with rural, two-lane roads and houses scattered among the farmland. The neighborhood of West Meadows grew up as part of the suburban expansion of Tampa back in the 1990s to the area, which became known as New Tampa. West Meadows was built near Bruce B Downs Road, which has become a major thoroughfare in New Tampa. The neighborhood is close to everything, including many major restaurant and retail chains, as well as unique, local shops and places to eat. Supermarkets, schools, theaters, and churches are also nearby, yet West Meadows is hidden away from the busy roads and is a very quiet place to live. One of several planned communities in New Tampa that sprung up in the 1990s, West Meadows borders a large wilderness preserve, which has hiking trails and a nature park. West Meadows is home to about 2400 residents, many with kids.

West Meadows is in the suburbs, with tranquil streets, lots of peace and quiet, and proximity to open spaces and nature, and like most suburban neighborhoods, it isn’t considered a walkable neighborhood. The New Tampa area does have bike lanes on most major roads, but West Meadows isn’t considered a good neighborhood for bikes. Almost all errands will require a car. The nearest airport to West Meadows is Tampa International Airport, about 27 miles away. West Meadows is close to Interstates 75 and 275, providing easy access to downtown. The villages in West Meadows are accessible from Highwoods Preserve Parkway to the west and New Tampa Blvd to the north.
